Wörlitz Park is a gorgeous park in Leipzig that belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dessau-Wörlitz Garden. The park near Dessau was designed by Leopold III. Friedrich Franz, Prince and Duke of Anhalt-Dessau. Franz was an enlightened spirit who promoted science and tolerance in his empire.

The park in Wörlitz was one of the first English landscape gardens in Germany and is still one of the largest of its kind in the country. With over a million visitors a year, the Wörlitz Park is one of the most important tourist destinations in the State of Saxony-Anhalt.

The landscape park was designed by Johann Friedrich Eyserbeck. The court gardener Eyserbeck got to know the landscape garden on a trip to England.

Later he traveled again to the island with Prince Franz and the architect Erdmannsdorff, to study the english garden art. The three men gatherd ideas for their garden in Wörlitz.

The Wörlitzer Park was created by Eyserbeck between 1769 and 1773. Erdmannsdorff designed the buildings in the park. The center of the park is Lake Wörlitz, a former branch of the river Elbe. The elongated lake divides the park into two parts.

The southern part is located at the village of Wörlitz, here is also the castle. The northern part can only be reached by ferry or you have to walk around the park. This gives the northern part the impression of a secluded island.

The park essentially consists of five elements: trees, water surfaces, meadows, isolated buildings and the sky.

The trees define the space and direct the view, the meadows provide space, the buildings serve as an eye-catcher or viewpoint and the water reflects the sky. The sky creates a varied mood through light and passing clouds. -Regiopia

One of the most attractive parks in Leipzig and local recreation areas in the city of Leipzig is the Leipzig Wildlife Park in the southern floodplain forest. Around 25 animal species with around 250 animals are kept on the approximately 46 hectare area.

Animal species are presented that

•occur in the wild in Central Europe, for example roe deer, wild boar and red deer

•used to appear here, for example bison, lynx and elk

•have recently become at home with us, for example raccoons, mouflon and mink

As a result, the Connewitz Wildlife Park complements the animal species composition with other animal-keeping facilities in the city of Leipzig such as the Leipzig Zoo which ostensibly shows exotic animals, or the Bauersfeld company’s pet zoo , where visitors can see different breeds of domestic animals.

The wildlife park (also) sees itself as a “PR agency” for native animals and nature. Its aim is to promote species and habitat protection. The wildlife park is also an information center for the local fauna, offers the opportunity to conduct research and is of course an attractive recreational area for visitors. -Stadt Leipzig
